Barn Owl

This is a rare species in Edinburgh. It has occasionally been seen in large city green spaces such as Craigmillar Park and has even bred in Holyrood Park! There are also a number of breeding records from the suburbs of Edinburgh. This species can be seen at dusk hunting over rough grassland where it finds its principal prey species – voles, mice and shrews. It has a haunting screech which can be heard on the RSPB Web site. If you have seen this species in Edinburgh please report your sighting on the Sightings in Edinburgh page.

The Barn Owl is a Schedule 1 species under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 and receives special protection at all times.
